Article in the magazine Etudes: ‘Le fait religieux dans les manuels scolaires d’histoire’

Dominique Avon, co-director of the IPRA, has published a short article in the January 2016 issue of the magazine Études: ‘Le fait religieux dans les manuels scolaires d’histoire‘ (religion in history school books). This text is linked to the first conference conference organized by the IPRA on this topic, which took place in December 2015 (you will find the program here ; the recordings of the conference will be available in IPRA’s resource center later this year).

L’enseignement du fait – ou des faits – religieux dans les établissements scolaires, est organisé de manière différenciée au sein de l’Union européenne. La France a opté pour une approche transversale qui concerne les disciplines que sont l’histoire, le français, l’éducation à la citoyenneté, voire la philosophie, quand la Grande Bretagne maintient un cours de  Religious Education. Les programmes sont nationaux, ils s’appliquent aux établissements publics comme privés, mais les seconds peuvent organiser, en sus, un cours spécifique. La guerre des manuels, celle qui opposait le “Guiraud” des jésuites au “Malet-Isaac” de la laïque, appartient à un passé révolu.
