Conference ‘Les Dominicains en France (XIIIe-XXIe siècle)’, 10-12 December 2015 – Paris

The conference ‘Les dominicains en France (XIIIe-XXIe siècle)’ / The Dominicans in France (13th-21st centuries) will take place in Paris, as a part of the eighth centenary of the founding of the Order of Preachers by St Dominic. This event is organized with the help of the Institut de France and the province dominicaine de France.

Dominique Avon, co-director of the IPRA, will give a lecture on Saturday, December 12 at 9:30, on the following topic: « Frères prêcheurs et intellectuels musulmans dans le contexte post-conciliaire » (Preacher friars and Muslim intellectuals in the post-conciliar context”

Summary: The Order of Preachers, which will undergo a remarkable expansion throughout Europe and beyond, was shaped by the two environments in which it has built its identity: the Albigensian country where Dominique grasped the severety of the crisis the Church of his time was facing, and the young Parisian university, where he sent the first friars to learn how to defend the Christian faith and how to spread the message of the Bible. How, over the centuries, has the original missionary zeal been implemented and reinvented by the brothers and sisters of the Order of Preachers in the world in which they lived ? The conference will address this question in four themes: the transmission of the religious message; “Self-awareness”: reflexion of the Dominicans upon their works; the Dominicans and the rest of the world; reforms, crisis and variations.
