Conference: ‘Les religions face aux théories et aux politiques de la “race”‘ – 1-3 June 2016, Le Mans / Paris
The international conference “Les religions face aux théories et aux politiques de la ‘race’ (XVe-XXIe s.)” / Religions vs Racial Theories and Racial Politics (XVth-XXth century), organized by Vincent Vilmain with the assistance of the IPRA, will take place at the Université du Maine (Le Mans) and at the GSRL – Groupe Sociétés Religions Laïcité (Paris), from the 1rst to the 3rd June 2016.
Summary: If the spirit of the great monotheistic religions rejects in theory distinctions other than religious, in reality, the reactions of religious authorities towards the emergence of the idea of “race” are not well known. How do western religions put up with the construction of differences based on a ‘biologisation’ of individual and collective identity which is sometimes incompatible with religious identities? What part does religion plays in the construction of racial identities? What influence did “race” have out of Europe, in diverse religions?
