Dominique Avon, co-director of the IPRA, gave a lecture entitled ‘L’université Al Azhar et les développements religieux en Egypte’ (the Al Azhar university and the religious developments in Egypt) at the Musée d’Aquitaine of Bordeaux on the 10th of November 2015.
Summary: Founded more than a thousand years ago under a Shia dynasty, Al -Azhar has been since Saladin, a major reference for Sunni Islam. Ottoman Sultan Selim I of President Mubarak through Bonaparte, or Muhammad Ali Nasser, its authorities have not been independent of political power. The mediating role played by the institution in the years 2011-2012 was seen as a sign going in the direction of greater autonomy. However , fighting between the government of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Egyptian army on the law on the new status of Al -Azhar showed the limits of this process.
