Lecture: ‘État laïque, État à référence confessionnelle : quels enjeux ?’ – 02/23/2016 (Le Mans)

Dominique Avon, co-director of the IPRA, will give a lecture entitled  “État laïque, État à référence confessionnelle : quels enjeux ?” on the 23rd of February  2016. This event is organized by the Université du Maine and the Association des Étudiants en Histoire (AEH).

Summary: The principles discussed during the founding of the UN and the establishment of its reference texts (Charter of San Francisco, 1945; Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948), sometimes strongly debated, were characterized by a secularized approach of society rules. Yet, from that moment, some States were recognized on a religious basis: Pakistan, Israel, Ceylon (Sri Lanka). This reality, fringy and overshadowed by the confrontation of the two blocks during the Cold War and by Decolonization, came to light in the late 1970s, when politicians expressed an interest towards a religious definition of the state. The movement kept growing in importance, accelerated by the collapse of the Soviet bloc, and going as far as challenging some public life rules that seemed unquestionable for instance in West European, North American or Indian societies.
